How to make YouTube Shorts from long videos
Every long video you have already made holds a few Shorts: the best answer, the sharpest tip, the story people would send to a friend. This guide walks through turning one into several Shorts that work on their own and lead viewers back to the full video.

1. Find moments that make sense on their own
A Short is watched by people who haven't seen the long video. The moment you pick has to make one complete point without the minutes before it. Read the transcript rather than scrubbing the timeline; good moments are easier to spot as text. Look for:
- A clear question with a direct answer.
- A short story with a turn or a punchline.
- One practical tip someone could use today.
- A strong opinion, stated plainly.
- A surprising number or fact, with its explanation.
2. Cut clean edges
Start on the first word of the idea, not on the breath, the "so" or the end of the previous answer. End right after the point lands. A clip that ends mid-sentence, or rambles past its ending, feels broken even when the middle is great.
Inside the clip, shorten long pauses and remove filler sounds like "um". Small jump cuts are normal in Shorts.
3. Crop to vertical without losing what matters
A 16:9 frame cropped to 9:16 keeps only about a third of its width, so the crop has to follow the subject. Keep one speaker's face in the frame as they move. Give two people a panel each, one above the other. For a screen recording, show the screen with the presenter above or below it.
4. Add captions and a hook
Burn in large captions, two to four words at a time, so the clip works with the sound off. Then make the first second count: open on the most interesting line, or put a short headline on screen that says what the viewer is about to get.
5. Publish and point back to the long video
Give each Short its own title written for someone who has never heard of you. In YouTube Studio you can link a Short to a related video on your channel, which gives interested viewers a one-tap way to the full episode.
Post the Shorts from one long video over several days rather than all at once, and keep the ones that do well in mind when you pick moments next time.
How TheMomentra handles this
Upload the long video and TheMomentra reads the transcript, picks the moments that stand on their own and tells you why each was chosen. Each clip is cut on sentence boundaries, framed for one, two or three people or a screen, captioned and paced, with an optional headline and AI voice hook. You review every clip before it is published. The Free plan includes 30 minutes of video a month, no card needed.
